Independents May (Finally) Get to Participate in Free and FairElections

Voter Initiative Effort to Dump Party Primaries

Voters registered as Independents have been discriminated against for
years in Arizona’s partisan primaries. But that may soon change. The Make
Elections Fair Committee is sponsoring a ballot initiative to change the
current system so that all qualified candidates appear on primary ballots,
regardless of whether they are affiliated with the Republican or Democratic
party. In most instances, the top two candidates would move forward to the
general election.

The initiative will pursue collection of 500,000 signatures by July 3, 2024 to
get on the ballot. The initiative campaign is estimated to cost about $6.5
million, but has already raised about $4.5 million.
