Thank you for contacting me with your concerns regarding immigration. I appreciate your feedback on this critical issue and am pleased to have this opportunity to respond.
As Arizonans, we know that securing our borders and enforcing our immigration laws are not only good policies, but are paramount to our national security. The Biden Administration’s policies have resulted in record-high levels of immigration and as a result, dangerous drugs such as Fentanyl have become more accessible and are killing more Americans. Porous borders pose a grave threat to the security of our state and country while threatening our economic stability. I believe this issue demands action now and cannot wait.
I have always believed that immigration authorities lie with Congress, well beyond the powers of the Executive branch. As always, I remain strongly opposed to any sort of amnesty program that would grant illegal immigrants citizenship. I do not believe that illegal immigrants should be rewarded for breaking our laws, while millions of law-abiding immigrants are waiting in line to become American citizens.
America, a nation founded by immigrants, will always be a welcoming country, but we need to enforce our current immigration laws. Any meaningful discussion on immigration policy should involve systemic changes to our nation’s immigration system and not include programs like the Diversity Visa Lottery, which chooses individuals at random instead of prioritizing high-skilled workers that can make a meaningful contribution to our nation’s economy, or policies like familial migration, where extended family members are allowed to piggyback on the generosity of our taxpayers. Programs like E-Verify, or utilizing modern technology to ensure visitors coming through our land, air and sea borders do not overstay their visas, are ways forward that are consistent with America’s welcoming message while ensuring people are not illegally prolonging their stay here.
Our country was founded on the principles of freedom and opportunity for all citizens, and this must start with securing our borders and protecting our communities. I will keep your thoughts in mind as Congress considers any immigration-related legislation.
I am greatly honored to serve you in Congress and look forward to future correspondence with you. Please contact me if you have future questions or concerns that I may assist you with.
Sincerely,
David Schweikert
