Arizona’s Top Journalists Honored

·

Each year the Arizona Newspapers Association honors members of their profession who achieve excellence in their field. Accurate reporting is critical to the functioning of our democracy. We are proud to congratulate two of this year’s recipients, who have demonstrated an appreciation for how important Independent Voters are here in Arizona. Both appeared on Zoom sessions early in the formation of our Network.

Stacey Barchenger was named Journalist of the Year for 2022, the top honor for an Arizona journalist. She covered the dynamic interplay of the campaigns and election of Katie Hobbs, Governor, and Kris Mayes, Attorney General, as they fought their way into office and began serving their terms of office. Contention over their election continues in the courts to this day.

Stacey rises above the noise of our fraught political environment to offer, in the words of Greg Burton, the Arizona Republic’s Executive Editor, “an oasis of clarity surrounded by political tempests.” He declares she is “utterly deserving of this recognition.” We heartily agree!

Kaely Monahan is a producer of podcasts for the Republic and was accorded first place in that category for her in-depth episode on Independent Voters in Arizona. As producer of “The Gaggle,” Kaely regularly shares material and personalities reflecting the complex nature of Arizona’s culture, society, and political dynamics.

We join in applauding Stacey and Kaely because of their critical role in offering accurate and timely information to our fellow Arizonans. We are fortunate to have the Arizona Republic and its outstanding staff represented by these two reporters as a source of dependable insight on critical issues and pivotal personalities shaping our State and regions.
